The Day a Hospital Room Became a Bruins Locker Room

The Boston Bruins Foundation wanted to do something special for a treatment room in Pediatric Oncology at Mass General Hospital.

Together, we imagined transforming the room into an old-fashioned Bruins locker room—a place filled with team history, familiar names and the feeling that every child entering it had an entire team standing behind them.

The finished mural included jerseys, equipment, retired Bruins players and small moments of humor and discovery throughout the room. Several parts of the artwork could also be scanned with ActiveART, allowing the mural to reveal additional stories through video.

At the ribbon cutting, Bruins leadership, hospital staff and members of our cancer community gathered to see the completed space.

But the moment I remember most clearly came when a young patient walked into the room.

Her face lit up.

In that instant, the speeches, planning, painting and technology all faded into the background. Her reaction was the real reward.

That is what healing art can do. It cannot change a diagnosis or replace extraordinary medical care. But it can change how a space feels. It can offer a child a moment of surprise, belonging and joy in a room they may have entered feeling frightened.

The mural was built through collaboration between the Bruins Foundation, Mass General Hospital, ActiveART and the people who care for these children every day.

It became more than a decorated wall.

It became a reminder that no child enters that room alone.
